In the How stuff works section on carbon capture the global problem is pretty much captured here:-
Quote:
Since alternative forms of energy cannot yet replace a power source as cheap and plentiful as coal, clean coal technology promises to mitigate the increasingly severe climactic effects of coal emissions. Utility companies and businesses do not, however, always accept technology purely for the sake of the environment -- the technology must first make economic sense.

Our planet will choke to death because it is not economic to save it.

That's the reason for CO2 taxes. Goverments have to make pollution (not just CO2 emissions) so expensive, that it is economical not to pollute the environment.

For 270 working days the energy consumption of the lhc accelerator is:
800,000 MWh.

The 120MW lhc power consumption is equivalent to that of the Canton of Geneva.

The difference is people live in Geneva.

I prefer recognising where theoretical risk
- to life
- cannot be excluded. Why don't you? Or what are you arguments that risk is excluded?
I feel sure that I can show various scientific neglects.

Nevertheless, even without a catastrophe from mbhs or strangelets, lhc certainly helps to nudge us towards the precipice.
